Background: Frailty is a significant concern in the field of public health. However, currently, there is a lack of widely recognized and reliable biological markers for frailty. This study aims to investigate the association between systemic inflammatory biomarkers and frailty in the older adult population in the United States. Methods: This study employed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) spanning 2007 to 2018 and conducted a rigorous cross-sectional analysis. We constructed weighted logistic regression models to explore the correlation between the Systemic Immune-Inflammation Index (SII), Systemic Inflammatory Response Index (SIRI), and frailty in the population aged 40 to 80 years. Using restricted cubic spline (RCS), we successfully visualized the relationship between SII, SIRI, and frailty. Finally, we presented stratified analyses and interaction tests of covariates in a forest plot. Results: This study involved 11,234 participants, 45.95% male and 54.05% female, with an average age of 64.75 ± 0.13 years. After adjusting for relevant covariates, the weighted logistic regression model indicated an odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval(CI) for the correlation between frailty and the natural logarithm (ln) transformed lnSII and lnSIRI as 1.38 (1.24-1.54) and 1.69 (1.53-1.88), respectively. Subsequently, we assessed different levels of lnSII and lnSIRI, finding consistent results. In the lnSII group model, the likelihood of frailty significantly increased in the fourth quartile (OR = 1.82, 95% CI: 1.55-2.12) compared to the second quartile. In the lnSIRI group model, the likelihood of frailty significantly increased in the third quartile (OR = 1.30, 95% CI: 1.10-1.53) and fourth quartile (OR = 2.29, 95% CI: 1.95-2.70) compared to the second quartile. The interaction results indicate that age and income-to-poverty ratio influence the association between lnSIRI and frailty. RCS demonstrated a nonlinear relationship between lnSII, lnSIRI, and frailty. Conclusion: The results of this cross-sectional study indicate a positive correlation between systemic inflammatory biomarkers (SII, SIRI) and frailty.

Psoriasis is an incurable immune-mediated disease affecting the skin or the joints. There are continuing studies on drugs for psoriasis prevention and treatment. This research found that Geniposide (GE) significantly thinned IMQ mice's skin lesions, reduced the scales, and lowered the presence of inflammatory cells in the pathology in a dose-dependent manner. GE inhibited IL-23, IL-22, IL-17A, IL-12, IL-6, and TNF-α levels in psoriatic mice serum. AKT1, TNF, TLR4, MMP9, MAPK3, and EGFR were selected as the top 6 targets of GE against psoriasis via network pharmacology, and GE-TLR4 has the most robust docking score value by molecular docking. Taken together, GE significantly inhibited TLR4 and MMP9 protein expression and influenced MyD88/NF-κB p65 signaling pathway. Finally, TLR4 was verified as the critical target of GE, which engaged in immunomodulatory activities and reduced MMP9 production in LPS and TAK-242-induced HaCaT cells. GE had a medium affinity for TLR4, and the KD value was 1.06 × 10-5 M. GE is an effective treatment and preventative strategy for psoriasis since it impacts TLR4.

Psoriasis, a chronic inflammatory skin disease induced by various factors, including genetic factors, immune factors, environmental factors, and psychological factors, is characterized by thickening of the epidermis, excessive proliferation of keratinocytes, abnormal differentiation, and an excessive inflammatory response. Traditional treatments for psoriasis still face challenges because of limited curative effects, notable side effects, and a tendency for recurrence. In contrast, topical therapy provides a favorable option for psoriasis treatment because of its noninvasive and self-administered method. In this study, gentiopicrin (Gen) is encapsulated in the liposomes to form a nanodrug, and then chitosan is covered on the nanodrug to assemble the nanodrug delivery system (CS@Gen), which is used as a topical agent for treating psoriasis. Then M5 (a mixture of five pro-inflammatory cytokines, i.e., IL-17A, IL-22, IL-1α, oncostatin M, and TNF-α)-induced HacaT cells and imiquimod-induced psoriasis mouse models are established, whose results show that CS@Gen induces apoptosis and inhibits the proliferation and cell migration of psoriasis keratinocytes. Additionally, the application of CS@Gen cream can significantly reduce epidermal thickness, diminish skin scaling, and improve other related mechanisms in mice affected by psoriasis. Meanwhile, the prepared CS@Gen can significantly reduce the expression levels of IL-17a, Cxcl2, S100a, Mki67, and other related inflammatory factors, resulting in indirectly inhibiting the inflammation of keratinocytes. In summary, the present study provides an ideal loading for an anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory drug delivery system for the treatment of psoriasis.

BACKGROUND: Infectious laryngotracheitis (ILT) is a highly infectious upper respiratory tract disease of chickens caused by infectious laryngotracheitis virus or Gallid herpesvirus 1 (GaHV-1). ILT is an important respiratory disease of chickens and annually causes significant economic losses in the chicken industry. Although numerous relevant studies have been published, the overall prevalence of ILT infection among chicken in mainland China is still unknown, and associated risk factors need to be evaluated to establish preventive measures. RESULTS: The present study reviewed the literature on the prevalence of ILT in chickens in China as of December 20, 2022, retrieved from six databases-CNKI, Wanfang, VIP, PubMed, Web of Science, and ScienceDirect-were used to retrieve relevant studies published between January 1, 1981 and December 20, 2022. The literature quality of studies was assessed, and 20 studies with a total of 108,587 samples were included in the meta-analysis. Results of the meta-analysis showed that the overall prevalence of ILT was 10% (95% confidence interval: 8 -12%) through the random-effects model, which showed high heterogeneity, I2 = 99.4%. Further subgroup analyses showed that the prevalence of ILT decreased over time; furthermore, the prevalence in Northwest China was slightly lower than that in North China and South China, and the prevalence estimated using the diagnostic technique AGP was higher than that reported using other diagnostic techniques. CONCLUSIONS: ILT is prevalent to some extent in mainland China. Given that the ILT attenuated live vaccine has a certain level of virulence and the prevalence differences between regions, we recommend controlling breeding density, improving immunization programs and continuously monitoring viruses and to prevent ILT prevailing in mainland China.

In the brain, the role of matrilin-3, an extracellular matrix component in cartilage, is unknown. Here, we identify that matrilin-3 decreased in reactive astrocytes but was unchanged in neurons after ischemic stroke in animals. Importantly, it declined in serum of patients with acute ischemic stroke. Genetic or pharmacological inhibition or supplementation of matrilin-3 aggravates or reduces brain injury, astrocytic cell death, and glial scar, respectively, but has no direct effect on neuronal cell death. RNA sequencing demonstrates that Matn3-/- mice display an increased inflammatory response profile in the ischemic brain, including the nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) signaling pathway. Both endogenous and exogenous matrilin-3 reduce inflammatory mediators. Mechanistically, extracellular matrilin-3 enters astrocytes via caveolin-1-mediated endocytosis. Cytoplasmic matrilin-3 translocates into the nucleus by binding to NF-κB p65, suppressing inflammatory cytokine transcription. Extracellular matrilin-3 binds to BMP-2, blocking the BMP-2/Smads pathway. Thus, matrilin-3 is required for astrocytes to exert neuroprotection, at least partially, by suppressing astrocyte-mediated neuroinflammation.

Packaging materials with peculiar antibacterial properties can shield off and inhibit microorganism proliferation, thus achieving packaging goals such as fresh-keeping, good hygiene, and biosafety. Especially, antibacterial films made of biocompatible substances have received wide attentions, which could effectively extend the shelf life, enhance food security, and guarantee economic benefits. Herein, a self-supporting hybrid antibacterial film was prepared based on non-covalently linked choline hydroxide (ChOH) and alginic acid (HAlg). Then tannic acid (TA) and silver ions were added to improve the mechanical and antimicrobial properties of this hybrid film. The rich hydroxyl groups from TA not only form multiple hydrogen bonds with ChAlg, but can also in situ reduce silver ions to silver nanoparticles, which were confirmed with various characterizations. In addition, the quantitative antibacterial test proved that the antibacterial rate was significantly improved after adding silver ions, reaching >60 %. In an actual storage test, we found that choline cation (Ch+) captured in antibacterial film by electrostatic interaction could achieve sustained release, i.e. sustainable bacteriostasis, and keep strawberries fresh for 48 h at room temperature. This work offers a new strategy for preparing antibacterial films via non-covalent weak interactions, explored an alternative antibacterial film for food packaging applications.

Ethyl carbamate (EC), a multisite carcinogenic compound, is naturally produced from urea and ethanol in alcoholic beverages. In order to reduce the content of EC in wine, the accumulation of arginine in Saccharomyces cerevisiae was regulated by genetic modifying genes involved in arginine transport and synthesis pathways to reduce the production of urea. Knockout of genes encoding arginine permease (Can1p) and amino acid permease (Gap1p) on the cell membrane as well as argininosuccinate synthase (Arg1) respectively resulted in a maximum reduction of 66.88% (9.40 µg/L) in EC, while overexpressing the gene encoding amino acid transporter (Vba2) reduced EC by 52.94% (24.13 µg/L). Simultaneously overexpressing Vba2 and deleting Arg1 showed the lowest EC production with a decrease of 68% (7.72 µg/L). The yield of total higher alcohols of the mutants all decreased compared with that of the original strain. Comprehensive consideration of flavor compound contents and sensory evaluation results indicated that mutant YG21 obtained by deleting two allele coding Gap1p performed best in must fermentation of Cabernet Sauvignon with the EC content low to 9.40 µg/L and the contents of total higher alcohols and esters of 245.61 mg/L and 41.71 mg/L respectively. This study has provided an effective strategy for reducing the EC in wine.

Oleanolic acid (OA) is a pentacyclic triterpene with reported protective effects against various diseases, including diabetes, hepatitis, and different cancers. However, the effects of OA on obesity-induced muscle atrophy remain largely unknown. This study investigated the effects of OA on skeletal muscle production and proliferation of C2C12 cells. We report that OA significantly increased skeletal muscle mass and improved glucose intolerance and insulin resistance. OA inhibited dexamethasone (Dex)-induced muscle atrophy in C2C12 myoblasts by regulating the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway. In addition, it also inhibited expression of MuRF1 and Atrogin1 genes in skeletal muscle of obese mice suffering from muscle atrophy, and increased the activation of PI3K and Akt, thereby promoting protein synthesis, and eventually alleviating muscle atrophy. Taken together, these findings suggest OA may have potential for the prevention and treatment of muscle atrophy.

OBJECTIVE: Comparing the clinical efficacy of thoracoscopy and robotic surgery in the treatment of mediastinal tumors using meta-analysis. METHODS: Computer retrieval of PubMed, Embase, The Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases for literature comparing the clinical effects of video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) and robot-assisted thoracic surgery (RATS) in treating mediastinal tumors, with the retrieval time limit from the establishment of the database to September 2023. Two evaluators independently screened the literature, extracted data, and assessed the risk of bias. Meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5.4. RESULTS: A total of 19 articles were included, with a total of 3517 patients. The results of the Meta-analysis showed that the RATS group had less intraoperative bleeding [MD = - 5.20, 95%CI (- 9.28, - 1.12), P = 0.01], lower rate of conversion to thoracotomy [OR = 0.41, 95%CI (0.23, 0.72), P = 0.002], lower rate of total postoperative complications [OR = 0.57, 95%CI (0.34, 0.95), P = 0.03], shorter postoperative drainage time [MD = - 0.72, 95%CI (- 1.13, - 0.32), P = 0.0004], and shorter postoperative hospital stay [MD = - 0.90, 95%CI (- 1.16, - 0.65), P < 0.001], in comparison with the VATS group. There was an insignificant difference between the two groups in terms of tumor size [MD = - 0.02, 95%CI (- 0.33, 0.30), P = 0.91] and operation time [MD = 0.17, 95%CI (- 7.61, 7.94), P = 0.97]. However, in regards to hospitalization costs [MD = 2634.75, 95%CI (991.62, 4277.88), P = 0.002], the RATS group was more expensive than the VATS group. CONCLUSION: Robot-assisted mediastinal tumor resection surgery has more advantages in terms of intraoperative bleeding, conversion to thoracotomy rate, total postoperative complication rate, postoperative drainage time, and postoperative hospital stay, in comparison with thoracoscopic-assisted mediastinal tumor resection surgery. There is an insignificant difference in tumor size and operation time between the two surgeries. However, robot-assisted mediastinal tumor resection surgery increases hospitalization costs.

BACKGROUND: Tapes dorsatus is an economically important benthic animal in the Beibu Gulf of China. However, the deficiency of microsatellite markers has hindered the study of its genetics. The development of microsatellite markers will provide useful tools for genetic improvement, variety identification, phylogenetic analysis and resource conservation. METHODS AND RESULTS: Within the genome sequence, 145,008 simple sequence repeats (SSRs) were identified, and 29,691 primer pairs were designed successfully. A total of 100 primer pairs were randomly synthesized for testing, and 93 primers yielded products. Sixty highly polymorphic primers were used to reveal the genetic diversity of 50 T. dorsatus individuals. The average number of alleles (Na) of the population was 10.40; the average number of effective alleles was 6.16, the average expected heterozygosity (He) was 0.82, and the average polymorphic information content was 0.80. The genetic structure of the population was detected, by which the population could be divided into three subpopulations. CONCLUSION: We identified 145,008 SSRs in the genome of T. dorsatus and designed 29,691 primer pairs in this study. Of 100 synthesized primers, 60 were highly polymorphic and used to reveal the genetic diversity and structure of the population. The SSR markers identified here will provide useful tools and a foundation for genetic diversity, linkage mapping and molecular marker-aided breeding in T. dorsatus.

Lutein exhibits excellent functional activity making it useful in many fields. Nevertheless, its use is limited by its physical and chemical instability. Here, collagen and Lycium barbarum L. leaf flavonoids (LBLF) were used as emulsifiers, their structures were characterized, the properties of the complexes were evaluated, and their stabilizing effects on lutein emulsions were explored. According to the results, the encapsulation rate of the complex of collagen-LBLF was (68.67 ± 1.43) % and the drug loading was (6.92 ± 0.13) %. Collagen compounded LBLF with a changed structure and morphology, resulting in improved antioxidant capacity, better foaming and emulsification, and reduced hydrophobicity. In addition, the thiobarbituric acid value of collagen-LBLF stabilized lutein emulsion (0.0012 ± 0.00011) mg/kg was significantly lower than that of collagen stabilized lutein emulsion (0.0021 ± 0.00016)  mg/kg (P < 0.05), indicating that the composite stabilized lutein emulsion obtained higher stability. LBLF contributed a high free radical scavenging effect and inhibited lutein degradation during storage. During simulated digestion, collagen-LBLF effectively stabilized the emulsion and protected lutein from destruction, made it release more slowly, and benefited the bio-accessibility of lutein during the next utilization step. Based on the present study, improved storage and digestion stabilities of lutein wereachievedby the utilization of collagen-LBLF complex, which provides a new method for the preparation and application of composite functional emulsifiers.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the impact of a hydroethanolic extract of walnut green husks (WGH) on rumen fermentation and the diversity of bacteria, methanogenic archaea, and fungi in sheep fed a high-concentrate diet. METHODS: Five healthy small-tailed Han ewes with permanent rumen fistula were selected and housed in individual pens. This study adopted a self-controlled and crossover design with a control period and an experimental period. During the control period, the animals were fed a basal diet (with a ratio of concentrate to roughage of 65:35), while during the treatment period, the animals were fed the basal diet supplemented with 0.5% hydroethanolic extract of WGH. Fermentation parameters, digestive enzyme activities, and microbial diversity in rumen fluid were analyzed. RESULTS: Supplementation of hydroethanolic extract of WGH had no significant effect on feed intake, concentrations of total volatile fatty acids, isovalerate, ammonia nitrogen, and microbial protein (p>0.05). However, the ruminal pH, concentrations of acetate, butyrate and isobutyrate, the ratio of acetate to propionate, protozoa count, and the activities of filter paper cellulase and cellobiase were significantly increased (p<0.05), while concentrations of propionate and valerate were significantly decreased (p<0.05). Moreover, 16S rRNA gene sequencing revealed that the relative abundance of rumen bacteria Christensenellaceae R7 group, Saccharofermentans, and Ruminococcaceae NK4A214 group were significantly increased, while Ruminococcus gauvreauii group, Prevotella 7 were significantly decreased (p<0.05). The relative abundance of the fungus Pseudomonas significantly increased, while Basidiomycota, Fusarium, and Alternaria significantly decreased (p<0.05). However, there was no significant change in the community structure of methanogenic archaea. CONCLUSION: Supplementation of hydroethanolic extract of WGH to a high-concentrate diet improved the ruminal fermentation, altered the structure of ruminal bacterial and fungal communities, and exhibited beneficial effects in alleviating subacute rumen acidosis of sheep.

The water solubility and brittleness of unplasticized sodium alginate (SA) films hinder their widely application. Glycerol (GLY), the most commonly used plasticizer, is compatible with alginate due to the formation of hydrogen bonding owing to the hydroxyl functional groups. However, GLY is a small water-soluble molecule, and the resulting leaching problem may lead to decline in mechanical properties of SA films. Aimed at better plasticizers for alginate (ALG) films, this work focuses on the effects of polymerization degree of polyglycerol on physical properties of ALG films. The cross-sectional morphology, crystallinity, mechanical and thermal properties, water solubility, water content and barrier property of ALG films plasticized with GLY, triglycerol (TG) and decaglycerol (DG) were characterized and discussed. Results illustrated that owing to the long molecular chains of TG and DG and their strong interactions with ALG matrix, the plasticized films possessed better mechanical properties, higher water content and lower water solubility. Moreover, it was worth mentioning that even after water treatment, the mechanical properties of ALG-TG and ALG-DG films were superior than that plasticized with GLY. The results of this study were believed to provide particular insights into the plasticization mechanism and the improvement in performance of SA films in packaging applications.

Background and Aims: Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is a common and aggressive form of cancer with a high incidence globally. This study aimed to investigate the role of P2RY13 in the progression of ccRCC and elucidate its mechanism of action. Methods: Gene Expression Omnibus and The Cancer Genome Atlas databases were used to extract gene expression profiles of ccRCC. These profiles were annotated and visualized by Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) functional enrichment analyses, as well as Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA). The STRING database was used to establish a protein-protein interaction network and to analyze the functional similarity. The GEPIA2 database was used to predict survival associated with hub genes. Meanwhile, the TIMER2.0 database was used to assess immune cell infiltration and its link with the hub genes. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) was used to determine the difference between ccRCC and adjacent normal tissue. Results: We identified 272 differentially expressed genes (DEGs). GO and KEGG analyses suggested that DEGs were primarily involved in lymphocyte activation, inflammatory response, immunological effector mechanism pathways. By cytohubba, the 20 highest-scoring hub genes were screened to identify critical genes in the protein-protein interaction network linked with ccRCC. Resting dendritic cells, CD8 T cells, and activated mast cells all showed a significant positive correlation with these hub genes. Moreover, a higher immune score was associated with increased prognostic risk scores, which in turn correlated with a poorer prognosis. IHC revealed that P2RY13 was expressed at higher levels in ccRCC compared to para-cancer tissues. Conclusion: Identifying the DEGs will aid in the understanding of the causes and molecular mechanisms involved in ccRCC. P2RY13 may play a pivotal role in the progression and prognosis of ccRCC, potentially driving carcinogenesis though immune system mechanisms.

BACKGROUND: Tumor deposits (TDs) are associated with poor prognosis in rectal cancer (RC). This study aims to develop and validate a deep learning (DL) model incorporating T2-MR image and clinical factors for the preoperative prediction of TDs in RC patients. METHODS AND METHODS: A total of 327 RC patients with pathologically confirmed TDs status from January 2016 to December 2019 were retrospectively recruited, and the T2-MR images and clinical variables were collected. Patients were randomly split into a development dataset (n = 246) and an independent testing dataset (n = 81). A single-channel DL model, a multi-channel DL model, a hybrid DL model, and a clinical model were constructed. The performance of these predictive models was assessed by using receiver operating characteristics (ROC) analysis and decision curve analysis (DCA). RESULTS: The areas under the curves (AUCs) of the clinical, single-DL, multi-DL, and hybrid-DL models were 0.734 (95% CI, 0.674-0.788), 0.710 (95% CI, 0.649-0.766), 0.767 (95% CI, 0.710-0.819), and 0.857 (95% CI, 0.807-0.898) in the development dataset. The AUC of the hybrid-DL model was significantly higher than the single-DL and multi-DL models (both p < 0.001) in the development dataset, and the single-DL model (p = 0.028) in the testing dataset. Decision curve analysis demonstrated the hybrid-DL model had higher net benefit than other models across the majority range of threshold probabilities. CONCLUSIONS: The proposed hybrid-DL model achieved good predictive efficacy and could be used to predict tumor deposits in rectal cancer. Mixed lineage kinase like protein (MLKL) is a key mediator of necroptosis. While previous studies highlighted the important role of MLKL as one of the central regulators of brain damage against acute ischemic neuronal injury, how the activation of MLKL mediates brain injuries and cell death remains unclear, especially in astrocytes. In a transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (tMCAO) rat model in vivo, and an oxygen-glucose deprivation and reoxygenation (OGD/Re) injury model in both primary cultured astrocytes and human astrocytes, we show that necrosulfonamide (NSA), a MLKL specific inhibitor, reduces infarction volume and improves neurological deficits in tMCAO-treated rats. In addition, NSA treatment, as well as RIP1K inhibitor Nec-1 or RIP3K inhibitor GSK-872 treatment, decreases the OGD/Re-induced leakage of LDH in both primary cultured astrocytes and human astrocytes. NSA treatment also reduces the number of propidium iodide (PI)-positive cells, and prevents the upregulation of necroptotic biomarkers such as MLKL/p-MLKL, RIP3K/p-RIP3K, and RIP1K/p-RIP1K in ischemic penumbra of cerebral cortex in tMCAO-treated rats or in OGD/Re-treated human astrocytes. Importantly, NSA treatment blocks both the nucleus and nuclear envelope localization of MLKL/p-MLKL and RIP3K/p-RIP3K in ischemic cerebral cortex induced by tMCAO. Similarly, Co-immunoprecipitation assay shows that NSA treatment decreases tMCAO- or OGD/Re- induced increased combination of MLKL and RIP3K in nuclear envelope of ischemic penumbra of cerebral cortex or of primary cultured astrocytes, respectively. RIP3K inhibitor GSK-872 also reduces tMCAO-induced increased combination of MLKL and RIP3K in nuclear envelope of ischemic penumbra of cerebral cortex. These data suggest NSA exerts protective effects against focal ischemia/reperfusion injury via inhibiting astrocytic necroptosis through preventing the upregulation of necroptotic kinases as well as blocking both the nucleus and nuclear envelope co-localization of p-MLKL and p-RIP3K. The translocation of p-MLKL, along with p-RIP3K, to the nuclear envelope and the nucleus may play a crucial role in MLKL-mediated necroptosis under ischemic conditions.

Macroautophagy/autophagy plays a pivotal role in immune regulation. Its significance is evident in modulation of immune cell differentiation and maturation, physiologically and pathologically. Here, we investigate the role of macrophage autophagy on the development of atopic dermatitis (AD). By employing an MC903-induced AD mice model, we observe reduced cutaneous inflammation in macrophage Atg5 cKO mice compared with WT mice. Notably, there is a decreased infiltration of M2 macrophages in lesional skin from Atg5 cKO mice. Furthermore, impaired STAT6 phosphorylation and diminished expression of M2 markers are detected in autophagy-deficient macrophages. Our mechanistic exploration reveals that CEBPB drives the transcription of SOCS1/3 and SQSTM1/p62-mediated autophagy degrades CEBPB normally. Autophagy deficiency leads to CEBPB accumulation, and further promotes the expression of SOCS1/3. This process inhibits JAK1-STAT6 pathway activation and M2 marker expression. Together, our study indicates that autophagy is required for M2 activation and macrophage autophagy may be a promising target for AD intervention.

Soil fauna play an important role in key functions of ecosystem such as material cycling. Litter quality and microenvironment of different tree species may regulate soil fauna community structure. In this study, we investigated soil fauna community structure, the differences of taxonomic and functional groups, and the regulatory factors under eight dominant tree species in August 2022. We captured 567 soil fauna (except for termites and ants), belonging to 3 phyla, 10 classes, 26 orders, and 99 families, with Achipteriidae, Trygoniidae, Poduridae, and Isotomidae as the dominant species. Tree species significantly affected soil fauna abundance, following an order: Michelia macclurei > Elaeocarpus decipiens > Castanopsis carlesii > Cunninghamia lanceolata > Lindera communis > Schima superba > Pinus massoniana > Liquidambar formosana. However, the richness, evenness, and diversity of soil fauna under different tree species were significantly different. Richness and diversity of M. macclurei, C. lanceolatas soil fauna were relatively high, while L. formosana, C. carlesii were relatively low. The evenness of meso-microfauna of L. formosana was the highest, which was significantly higher than that of M. macclureis and E. decipiens. The evenness of macrofauna and total soil fauna was not significantly different among the eight tree species. In addition, the abundance of omnivores and herbivores soil fauna was relatively high under M. macclurei, but relatively low under E. decipiens. The abundance of saprophages and predators soil fauna of E. decipiens, M. macclurei was higher than L. formosana, while saprophages was mainly meso-microfauna. Results of redundancy analysis showed that litter N, C:N, and K were the main factors affecting soil fauna community structure. The results indicated that the tree species with thicker litter layer and higher N and K contents may be conducive to enhancing the diversity of soil fauna community and affecting the distribution of different functional groups, thus contributing to the maintenance of forest biodiversity.

The total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), black carbon (BC), δ13CTOC, δ15N, δ13CBC, grain size, and heavy metals of surface sediments collected from Daya Bay were determined to investigate the spatial distributions of these parameters and to evaluate the influences of human activities. Marine organic matter was found to constitute approximately 84.41 ± 7.70 % of these sediments on average. The western and northern regions of Daya Bay exhibited relatively fine grain sizes, weak hydrodynamic conditions, and high sedimentation rates, which favored the burial and preservation of organic matter. The high concentration of organic matter could be attributed to the influence of petroleum and aquaculture industries. Fossil fuels were the main source of BC. The enrichment factor (EF) and geo-accumulation index (Igeo) were used to evaluate the sources and pollution levels of heavy metals. The results revealed that the source and distribution of heavy metals were strongly influenced by human activities, resulting in moderate pollution levels across most regions of Daya Bay. A strong correlation was observed between the Igeo values of heavy metals and BC, TOC, TN, and mean particle grain size (Mz). This suggests that the ability of sediments in Daya Bay to enrich and adsorb heavy metals depends on the sediment grain size, the content and type of organic matter. Importantly, sediments in the inner bay of Daya Bay exhibited a greater capacity to impede the migration of heavy metals compared to those in the outer bay.
